How much whey are you all getting from the yogurt? I don’t strain mine and there seems to be only a little. My yogurt is thinner than what I have normally bought but it’s good, not watery.

@allie120 When I strain it I strain 1.5 cups and I get .5 cup+ of whey. The yogurt is then softer than sour cream, I guess like soft ice cream. Without straining it’s like pancake dough.

@myrna Oh, ok.

I’ve been making mine in the crockpot, just monitoring the temperature. I guess I would have about a half cup or less of whey but I never strain it. It didn’t seem like it could be done!

@myrna Also, my first attempt at yogurt ended up like yogurt-tasting milk but I think it was because I wasn’t monitoring the temperature as closely as.

@allie120 @bar-in-the-sky Yogurt success!  I guess I combined your ideas and what I’ve read.  Used the instapot with the insert that lifts items off the bottom of the pot.  Heated up the milk to hot and there in ice cubes around the glass 2qt container with the milk.  Cooled to finger warm. I’d guess 100+ from my bread making experience.  Dusted the starter over the top and let sit a few minutes and stirred it in.  Closed pot, used low yogurt setting for 18 hours. It was definitely thicker than my previous attempts.  Cooled overnight in fridge.  Was a soft ice cream consistency and very tasty.  Just out of Aquarian curiosity I measured out one cup and let it filter for 6 hours and go 1/2 cup of whey.

Thanks for all your help. And in my other reading I found one can add gelatin or cornstarch to thicken while cooking if you want.

You can put the yogurt in individual portions after having it in the pot. Though I think this is where it might change in the consistency. The glass jar I use in the water bath machine I have I just put it directly in the fridge once it is done and let it chill over night ( then it is set ) I also water bath the yogurt for 24 hours at 107 degrees.

I’ve reread the directions and I was doing what it said.  I’ll try the water bath and for 24 hours.  That’s quite different from what I did.  How many inches of water do you use for the bath once the containers are in place?

@allie120 I find it hard to believe that was the intention all along.

@cocopeaches I don’t think the original company intended it either. They sell or are bought for many reasons and then giant corporations are no more incentivized, conscientious, health-driven than many individuals are. Also, I still prefer that an adult should be free to choose products they want. I like awareness, education, rejection, and resource reallocation towards/away from harmful additives, etc. as a way to promote a healthier diet/lifestyle for a population.

I was looking for a source that would show products’ original ingredients to compare to current ingredients. I wanted old labels but it was hard to find them online because the search results are so messed up nowadays.
