I watched TV when I was a kid but stopped after high school, and I barely watched any movies before meeting my husband. I've seen some, but not nearly as many as most of my peers, and I usually don't catch the references when people make them. Now we have a pretty nice routine of watching series or movies in the evening after dinner, mostly during the cooler half of the year. Every so often he discovers a cult classic that I've never seen. He enjoys watching things repeatedly so these are good finds. Last night it was:

Idiocracy. Wow! It was pretty surreal watching it nearly 20 years after the fact, and finding that the jokes punch even harder now. I thought it was funny, but very disturbing. A lot of things have come to light since that movie came out. I think the most interesting theme is how our social norms are modeled after pro wrestling. Fake drama, gratuitousness, bad guy vs bad guy, hijacking people's attention with performative displays of aggression - that's the playbook!

I just watched Grave of Fireflies. There’s been a few pieces of art/media where I feel like a different person after Ive experienced it and this is one. I just don’t even think I can put into words how moving it is. It’s a masterpiece. It shows the absolute best and worst in people. The worst being apathy and the best being courage and love.

Compare it one I just finished-Ozark where after watching to the finale I felt like I needed to clean my mind. I hated that there was no redemption (except for the character of Ruth and hers was eaten up too). Breaking Bad was the same. Just showing a characters descent into depravity. It’s boring. I vow to never watch anything like that again if I can help it.

My God, she's sooooo appealing. Charisma times 1 million, and fully clothed. I have always liked Johnny Cash, but she may actually be beyond him. What a powerhouse.

The law according to Lidia Poet. It’s in Italian, but I don’t mind subtitles.

The Curse Of The Sin Eater! 2024 Very poorly rated,  but of course I have to see this.

George and Tammy. My husband reminded me of this. That's Tammy. On of the best collaborations of all time.
