I know a man who was a high school teacher. A student accused him of inappropriate behavior (which I don't believe happened). The laws were such that she, being a minor, was not allowed to be cross-examined - it was really a legal situation that said that if they were in a situation without witnesses and she said something happened, then her word was considered truthful and unquestionnable.

He had no choice but to plead out. He lost his career and is considered a sex offender.

I think there is quite a bit of what Elsa is talking about, and the fact several of us here know of actual cases just underlines how easily men's lives can be ruined by this kind of hysterical, vengeful or twisted behaviour in women.

It's a kind of power trip in some cases, and a desire for fame in others. And in yet others, it's because of fear of parental or religious pressures or whatever.

It's a fiendishly tricky area for the law since by definition it's one person's word against another, and I very much doubt the police or juries always get it right, That also make sit very easy for screwed up women or vengeful women to cry rape as a weapon

Elsa asks "who do you believe and why?"

In the situation I listed, the man is married to my cousin. I do not know the girl.

I don't know him well at all, but he has always come off as a good guy.

I believe him because of my family. My extended family all live in the same general area (I'm the one who lives a bit far). They all supported him 110%. The defining point of my decision was the support of his father-in-law, my uncle. My uncle is one of the most no-nonsense people I have ever met. He would not support anyone who he believed guilty - certainly not someone married to one of his precious daughters!

I am watching Red Corner on the topic. American accused of rape and murder in China, late 90's.

to be honest i don't think someone can get over the stigma of being falsely accused and to be honest id probably never doubt a rape accusation. sad but true. I've known enough pedophiles to not trust anyone and well just because someone seems like they'd never ever do something like that does not mean they wouldn't.
