I've read several posts in the EE archives about this aspect, but they mostly mention obssessive thinking. Another thing is "hidden knowledge", but I don't understand how that works out. Does the person attain that knowledge, or is it forever unreachable? Are there other important characteristics?

Well an opposition is like a face-to-face battle, a confrontation between two planets. But with Mercury and Pluto it’s more like a complete domination lol, Mercury cannot hope to match up to Pluto so Pluto enforces itself entirely onto your mind and communication style. It can make you unnecessarily secretive and suspicious around your thoughts and ideas. Your not satisfied to just receive a piece of information, your convinced there’s something more going on underneath, a hidden motive, a deception, a lie. Your communication style could be incredibly forceful and domineering (to an overbearing degree) and/or incredibly quiet, an observer- your mind picking up on and exposing everything other people are saying and doing, which is unnerving and uncomfortable for other people to experience. You might just say things as they are, which can come across as harsh. Its almost like your too perceptive, you see all of the sh*t in the world so you can easily fall into self destructive mindsets about society and about people and that just leads to paranoia.

Mercury just wants to learn and talk and be light and fun but Pluto is always there, facing off against it, in direct conflict, not allowing any of that without a full psychological assessment. Small talk? Non-existent. Pluto won’t allow you to just have a light chat, a gossip, to enjoy reading and learning something for the sake of it, and not to examine the deeper meanings. You might judge yourself when you do those "superficial" things or judge others when you see them doing it. And that need to always be “deep” can be incredibly exhausting for you and the people around you. The aim of the opposition then is to try to balance out these two energies.

But a sharp and intelligent mind and incredible ability to research and uncover and strip back the layers. A detectives mind. A psychologists mind. Also vastly improves the powers of concentration. You might enjoy conversations that are hard-hitting and taboo because your mind is stimulated by extremes.

Thanks Charpy!

This aspect is in the chart of a friend, who is indeed rather paranoid about a lot of things, questions some things (but not all, such as things concerning herself) and has huge fear of anything "paranormal" (to her, like astrology...).

In a French astrology book I read they describe the aspect as "sorcerer's apprentice" approach, whereby you delve into things you might not fully understand, that you can't control or get out of hand. Strangely enough, in her case, she just completely avoids anything that her mind is afraid of. She will not approach with a 10-foot pole and NOT want to investigate, things completely taboo to her.

Then again, she has Mercury in Pisces and tends to go all over the place in her reasonings, so maybe difficult to balance the 2 energies. Pluto the deep dark wins out, I guess.

There are possibly 3 energies involved here. For the most part Pluto was in Virgo along with Neptune in Scorpio from Oct 1956 to Oct 1970, so its quite possible your friend's Neptune ruled Mercury is part of a small circle of planets that disposit each other resulting in a locked dimple or whirlpool type of 3 energies that cycles round and round and is a strong part of her make up. Mercury rules Pluto, Pluto rules Neptune, Neptune rules Mercury, round and round like a pinwheel. These planets would not have to be in aspect for this to occur, but you say the 2 mutables oppose and we know the fixed is in the mix, unless she was born after mid Nov 1970 to early Sep 1971 then forget everything I'm saying ha ha. The fixed-Scorpio Neptune (personal illusion) rules the mutable-Pisces Mercury (personal thinking) and the Mercury rules and opposes the mutable-Virgo Pluto (personal reality) which rules the Neptune and these 3 energies go round and round and round. The rest of the chart would explain more. Personally I have found it a waste of time trying to explain anything about astrology to someone who is not receptive or actually interested in it. Just sayin'.

@wintermoon This is so interesting! I have Pisces Mercury opposite Virgo Pluto. I tend to follow topics obsessively and see through people without trying, which makes some relationships difficult. I would prefer to be “lighter,” but it’s just not my nature.

Yes, definitely! I don't try to explain anything to her, I think it's useless! Sometimes I think she is a lost cause, which is a pretty depressing idea. I'm just trying to figure out her chart.

She is born on 21 march 1961, and her Neptune has only good aspects (trine Mars, sextile Pluto). I think the Mercury opp Pluto is what is screwing her mind, but as I mentioned, her Mercury is in Pisces (not necessarily a bad thing in itself). Did not think to mention Mercury is square her Moon (emotions). Well, yes, maybe the Mercury square Moon is also screwing her mind, and vice-versa.

She seems to reject everything, and wants love and attention, I think she lacks recognition. Her Aries Sun seems to be doing OK (sextile Saturn, Jupiter and Moon) but her Venus is square Saturn & Jupiter, so perhaps the frustration is more present (but Venus trine Pluto and Uranus, sextile Mercury - this seems good.)

Many good things in her chart, but she is an unhappy person. I think she herslef doesn't know why.

She thinks she needs a loving partner.

Well, can't say anything about that, huh? Everyone needs a loving partner!

Thank you for your insight! It seems her Neptune is not directly involved (as far as I can tell), but there is a round n' round thing in her head, focused on her frustration, which seems normal, when you're missing the only thing you don't have. And if you're an Aries (which she is) - they want what they want!
