I've been reading more about Eris lately -- a very interesting story.
In 2005, when Eris was discovered, she was thought to be larger than Pluto (who himself is quite small, smaller than Earth's Moon!) which spurred astronomers to consider her promotion to planet status. (Now astronomers estimate that she is very slightly smaller.)
As we know, this promotion did not happen, and instead Pluto was demoted in a very strange move that only about 5% of the members of the IAU voted on. It was at the very end of the conference and most people were already traveling home. If it weren't for Eris, however, and the resulting question of how to define a very distant planet, Pluto likely would not have been demoted. The definition used in these decisions is a mess, as many astronomers will attest.
It's very interesting to see how planets' origin stories reflect their nature. Eris is the goddess of strife/ discord, and that certainly is visible in how her discovery and recognition (or lack thereof) has unfolded.
Eris would have been the first planet named after a goddess, which is notable as well.
The ancients revered the 7 celestial bodies in part because 7 is a divine number.
8 is a number of limitation. 10, like 7, demonstrates a whole. I think it is inevitable that we eventually recognize Eris and re-establish Pluto as a planet. It will be interesting to see what social/ political/ earthly shifts correspond to the revision of this decision.
--> Do you use Eris? What do you see her corresponding to in practice? What do you think about the number of planets we have? What are your opinions on the relationship between astronomy and astrology? After all, astrologers didn't stop using Pluto after his demotion, so there is clearly divergence.
Interested to hear from you all!
It sounds like it was a very political decision (organizational politics). I don't know why but 5% voting after many members had already left ??
I don't use Eris because I feel overwhelmed when I use all those extras (I do use Chiron). I know it's just because I am not as knowledgeable about them. I mean, they don't come at me right off the top of my head. But it's always good to become more familiar with them and how they work in the chart.
I have Eris at 10 Aries in the 8H, exact square Mercury and Venus. Guess I should check that out!
I don't use it either even though I have read about it. I have Eris at 11 Aries in the 11th house where it makes no aspects at all. I guess everybody will have it in Aries actually.
Yup, Tam, with an orbital period more than double that of Pluto, Eris has been in Aries since ~1925 and won't leave until 2048. So we'd more look at aspect to it & house placement if we're looking at an individual. It's cool, though, the way Pluto gives us generationally shared placements, this one unites nearly all of us.
Some compare her to a feminine Mars. This idea evokes an image of an inactive volcano for me, solid and serene from above, with roiling power underneath, biding its time.
Eris, to me, is an Usher.
A Female Warrior Torch Bearer.
When she reaches Taurus, the Patriarch will die a shudderer's death and the Earth will, once again, be in the loving "hands" of a Matriarch existence.
The Sea will smile, you'll see...
Re: Number 8
Limitation? Perhaps. As regards to transformation - yes!!
Number 8 corresponds to power, ergo, Pluto.
Ever step inside an 8 house or an 8 business (address)??
Opulence, value, possessions, sturdy, refinement, money, etc.
In the 2008 opening day ceremonies in China, they finally got it right. All the practice runs were terrible. They achieved excellence when it mattered!!
08/08/2008 = 8
Power. Capital P.
