From the DSM
BPD-is a pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, amd marked impulsivity.
When I read about Narcissistic Personality Disorder it says it is a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy.
So I could see how the different personality disorders could effect one gender more than the other.
Just in all my days...I have very, very rarely heard a man called BPD.
It may not be sexist. It's just this guy in particular, he's about as classic as I have ever seen, man or woman. And I feel if he were a she, pulling this bullshit, no one would stand for it.
Unless he did something drastic, no criminal court will condemn him. Unfortunately, there is no court for people who treat others like shit and break their hearts.
I don't think it is sexist. My mom has BPD (runs in the family on her side) so I have read a lot on it. And I have also worked as a counsellor with people who have relatives with BPD (male and female both).
I agree with Nota. There were studies done about 25 years earlier that had pointed to that difference, but no evidence of gender bias in the therapists was found. In later studies is was found that true statistics as reagards gender are not known. Women with BPD tended to self harm more so are more easily included in psychiatric sampling while men with BPD express Anti social tendecies and substance abuse more so were more likely to be treated through prisons and other institutions.
Of course cultural biases and sex difference in parenting can make a difference in how the dysfunction is expressed, for example, more men are diagnoses with Narcissistic Personality Disorder than women. But there is nothing per se sexist about the diagnosis itself.
Justice Ruth Bater-Ginsburg was asked when the supreme court would have enough women. She replied: "When we get nine!" I agree!
Interesting re mental illnesses, though perhaps not entirely relevant.
