Castration As Punishment For Child Rape vs Making It Legal

Talk about a divide.  Louisiana has done this:

Meantime, other states are legalizing same.  This is quite a divide.

A decade ago, I wrote, I about being so sick of all the strife, it made sense to me, to split the country. Sort of like the Amish isolate and live by their own rules?

Around the same time, my husband was talking about the country becoming factionalized, which is what happens throughout history.

At this point it pretty much needs to happen. I just don't see how a gap this wide can be bridged. Personally, I'd rather not fight into eternity.

There are a number of regional laws happening in various places; this is another in the string of them. It's a good bet this trend continues.

This is not politics. I don't care what side you're on. The focus here is on the divide. At what point to do drop the "United" from the "States"?

The legislation gives Louisiana judges the option to sentence someone to surgical castration after the person has been convicted of certain aggravated sex crimes — including rape, incest and molestation — against a child under 13. The punishment is not automatic and would be by individual cases and at the discretion of the judge.

Since this is the United States, I doubt any of us will ever see the country split in our lifetimes. If ever.

@soup regardless of the name, do you feel the country is united?  Are you saying the people who would castrate a child rapist and people who would legalize are and still could be in the same family?

@elsa I think most people are united on how they feel about this particular protection of a child.

It should happen, but the global string pullers who methodically created the divide did so to create enough unrest to justify being put down by an imported mercenary army to ultimately force the survivors into compliant servitude.  Could the horrifying spectre of the failure and carnage of the only other serious attempt to secede ever be overcome?

@warped there was that book, The Big Sort. People have sorted themselves for the most part.

Some people don't fit on a side. I'm one of them.

@elsa

I'm sure I am too.  Although I think there are many sides, I don't think I'd fit in any of them entirely or exclusively.

Way back when we knew to "never discuss politics or religion," common interests like sports, pets, music, art, gardening, etc were the magnets that often loosely formed social groups.  The good old days!

From what I see, people have always sorted themselves into their particular groups. Humans have always done this.

We see it everywhere, and in the US too. The issue arises when my group wants to tell another group that even though I am on your soil, you have to accommodate me. It's backwards.

Yes, there is a forced agenda to get people to pick ideological sides. This is found within what Russia and China did prior to the red movements.

Protecting children is not ideological. If it is, then it is the person who believes that who should be in question.
