What food did you grow up on??
Pasta, here. Red sauce, but also butter and and garlic.
Gnocci and polenta, but also meat and potatoes. Beef, rather than chicken.
Family garden was entirely, grape vines, zucchini and herbs... rosemary and parsley.
You?
Casseroles. Lots of Campbell creamed of +++ soup with some vegetables and chicken. My mother was a home economics major in the 60’s and this is what was new at the time. She’s not a cook, I am, I haven’t made a casserole in 45 years. And the tater tots on the top!!! Can’t stand them and hey are horrible for you.
My mom, was a fabulous cook, she made everything! At Christmas, her father always had to have Lutefisk to remind him of the old country.
He and my grandmother were the only ones, who would eat it.
@turtle I had an aunt married to a Norwegian and they had lutefisk at their home. I tried it but not a fan. The lefse was wonderful though.
Pasta with meatballs and bracciole simmered for hours in ground plum tomato red "gravy." Roast chicken, chicken cutlets, cucumber and tomato salad with olive oil, potato salad with olive oil and fresh chopped garlic, potato croquettes, eggplant parmigiana, pasta fajiole, homemade pizza and spinach pies, potato frittata.
Crusty fresh baked Italian bread delivered at noon daily to the one village shop, which also sold black wax cheddar by the slice and penny candy. Fish & chips, fried clams, clam cakes and chowdah at the local summer beach places.
Home garden tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers. Rabbits got the lettuce!
Every imaginable home baked pie, pastry, cookies, and cakes. Italian favorites like wandis, "slices" (biscotti), egg biscuits, cream puffs, Crispelle on Christmas morning after the Christmas Eve seven fish feast. And occasionally Sfogliatelle from the Italian bakery in the city.
I duplicated nearly all pretty authentically throughout my marriage. Ah, nostalgia!
Mom liked to cook so we were pretty spoilt with having a variety of dishes. Dad grew our veggies which were yum.
Mom cooked casseroles, lasagna, various meats & rice dishes. She made sure our diet covered the food groups.
I loved coming home every Sunday night to a Roast Lamb, potatoes, pumpkin & assorted greens with mint sauce and gravy 😋. This was followed by a home made apple pie with cream/icecream.
Yes, my mom was very much a Taurus ♉️. We were always well fed 🙂.
