I spent a couple of summers on my aunt and uncle’s farm about 45-60 minutes away from home. The town was I don’t know how far but you couldn’t walk. My aunt would go in town once a week and take my cousin and I. It was a legit little town with a grocery store, general store, hardware, a park, the usual. Old houses. An inn. Actually it was Cazenovia, NY and there was a college there but not much happening at the college in summer.
So my cousin couldn’t drive and just stayed on the farm doing chores, helping, reading, watching tv. Once a year my other aunt would get her and take her to the mall in another town, closer to Syracuse. Once a year that was a big deal. I saw my uncle give her $100 spending money and my eyes almost popped out of my head (this was around 1977/78. My cousin has developmental issues so she was living at home in her 20’s still).
My aunt and uncle had to travel out of state for a week, which is why they had initially asked me to stay with my cousin, to keep her company. So she was an adult, I was 13 or so and we were there by ourselves on the farm TCB. No transportation but horses. Amazing. Priceless memories.
