So, I am on my way achieving a sorta goal of mine. One of my goals was to compete at powerlifting nationals, with the ginormous goal of going there before I hit 60. Before age 60, you need a qualifying total, which I’m still not at yet. Sixty and after, you just need a 75kg qualifying total (165.3#), which, if you’re just starting out or recovering and an elderly person (heck, you can compete when you’re 101), then it could be a challenge. Anyway, I got that, so I really wanted to see if I could qualify with the minimum in my age group, 295kg. That’s been a challenge for me!
Well, my coach and I came across some big meets next year. One of them is the 2024 USA Powerlifting Master's World Cup in Memphis. The requirements are age 40+ and having been in a USAPL meet.
👀
So I talked with my husband and I decided to do it. And I just signed up this morning. Non refundable 😅. It’s in May.
I’m excited scared lol.
I l ready know a couple of people who are on the roster plus my sister lives there!
I like sports too. I played a bunch and still like activity of all kinds. I just don't do much of it lately!
Currently enjoying the Phillies in the playoffs. I like baseball generally. If track is on tv I'll watch that. i love races. It was my sport growing up and I can still remember the thrill of all out sprinting towards the finish line.
Hey, everyone! I know it’s been awhile. I’m still here, still doing my thing, training, yardwork, gardening, time with the granddaughters, NASCAR, etc.
But I did compete in the Masters World Cup in May, as I had shared I was going to do. It was an incredible experience. All Masters lifters, from age 40 on up to a couple women in their 80’s. I knew so many people there! I had a couple of friends that were going, people I follow on IG, coaches from the gym I compete at locally, people I met at powerlifting camp last year. It was so much fun! And I hired an amazing handler, a woman I also know personally, a coach and a world class lifter. She helped me warm up, helped me stay focused, put in my attempts, and just let me focus and lift. That made it so much fun.
In addition, it was in Memphis where my sister lives so we added a few days on prior to visit. She came to my meet and that made me so happy.
I have so many pictures. I got a professional still and video package plus my husband took tons of pictures. I’m really proud of myself and I’ll figure out a way to post a few without hogging this entire thread, I hope.
Ok, I think I can share this link of my still photos from the meet.
My attempts were (in # so you don’t have to do math):
Squat: 182, 192.9, 204
Bench: 82.5, 93.5, 99 (I missed this one)
Deadlift: 231, 259, 275.5 (meet PR 🥳)
My third attempt deadlift, my handler asked if I wanted to try some nose tork (ammonia). I said sure. I was so amped. So I took a whiff, my eyes 😭, and I felt like a horse out the gate. That last attempt I almost ran out to the bar and I did a little hop and 🔥 I got my 275 meet PR, also a state record. Only state. There were some fierce and strong women breaking world records in my age/weight class but I’m still so proud!
I’ve signed up for a local meet for the end of October. It will be at my friend/coach’s gym a mile away! She finally got approval in the spring from the state chair. Very excited for her, too, as her gym is in another part if the state and can be easily accessible to MA and those up here in the northern/eastern part of CT.
