The end for publishers is here... zero click internet

"...It means an end to digital publishers. The small ones at first. Most of those will be out of business by the end of this year. Then the medium ones will vanish, most likely they will all be gone by spring. Eventually, most of the big publishers will go under. Those that survive will do so by signing contracts with platforms like Google or OpenAI (ChatGPT) to create content specifically for them to scrape.

Domain names will no longer have any value, since visiting websites will no longer be a significant portion of most internet traffic. This will spell the end for most domain registrars like GoDaddy and other companies whose entire business revolves around selling domains.

The web hosting business will contract as the number of websites in existence shrinks and the number of resources needed to run the remaining ones will decrease. Most smaller hosting companies will likely be out of business by the end of 2025.

The independent internet advertising business is also done for..."

wild.

predictions timeline:

..."most likely [the publishers] will all be gone by spring."

"Most smaller hosting companies will likely be out of business by the end of 2025."

"As publishers vanish, [independent] networks will have no websites to sell ads on, meaning they'll likely be out of business by the end of 2025 as well."

"The SEO industry is also doomed...none of [these billion dollar industries] will exist as a significant business by the end of 2026."

"It's the end of how things are, and a shift into something else. Whether it's good or bad in the long run remains to be seen, but in the short term, we're going to witness upheaval on a scale few are prepared to handle."

@belladonna the astrology is black out of heart-centered human creativity. Pluto in Aquarius.

While I had not seen this article yet, I’m not surprised at all. It’s happening.

I think we need an underground support system/network. Or at least find it and use and support it. Or use what’s out there less frequently.

I always thought it odd that Instagram still doesn’t support links. I understand its inception was pictures, like an image blog. But to still not have the function to post a live link? Maybe they just figured that’s what FB is for.

@allie120 Instagram doesn't support links because they are trying to keep you in the app, scrolling endlessly. That has always made me feel resentment towards IG. I generally visit through a web browser instead of using the app, because the functions are more limited and it's not as effective at sucking me in. I refuse to take their bait to purchase things through the app.

Wherever links are embedded, the author has a choice to make the new page open in the same window or open a new tab. I've noticed that Elsa's links always open in the same window, which gives me the impression that she's not trying to hold us hostage... like she really loves us and she's willing to let us go where we please!

Unfortunately, I think the article is exactly right about where things are going.

I think the future of the internet will be like a video game, there will be no intention of authentic representation but rather all artificial will be the assumed norm. Virtual identity.

I just saw a post promoting AI work headshots—who needs a photographer! Just submit an old photo and it generates a headshot for you.

Hell, everything is already filtered anyway, so eventually, no representation will be considered real because what a waste of time.

@belladonna This sounds entirely possible.  The old people die and younger people are good with it. Maybe even relieved, considering the social anxiety out there.

@elsa yes because another thing came to mind - I was watching a reality show and the difference between the show on camera and the cast's social media profiles, the pictures being so altered and filtered, was unreal.

It's like, we can all tell... we're not stupid so I think slowly it's moving toward to acceptance of this new reality to where we don't even talk about it anymore—our real lives vs who we are in the virtual sphere.

@belladonna yes, we're accepting our fate. I hope this changes, though it seems like it's too late,  unless...

@elsa I guess though people are making changes to their real bodies to resemble their virtual identities or desires.

I keep hearing people say, everyone looks the same now! I miss regular faces.

@belladonna and meantime, I quit shopping at kroger, I'm so repulsed by their ads.  But here is something funny. The people who work at kroger hate them too.  They don't want to be represented like that and further, customers complain about them.

Self censoring and avoiding discussing politics did not save us.

@nona but this is not the place.

I work here and you have no earthly idea what I have endured due to the fights.

I don't do well in a strife filled environment. It causes me suffering.

I'm also the only soul here, using my real name. I'm also the only one who can't leave!

In truth, I am not sure talking does any good and it may actually do more harm that good.

I mean that, honestly. Sometimes you have to quit pushing so a person can quit pushing back.. then the magic happens.

Also, we've been in each other's faces it not worse, for so long... well, it's just not effective.  So maybe let Saturn handle this.  aka consequences.

As for self-censoring, I do it because I need this job.  You can only say certain things, unless you want to be destroyed with technology. It's precarious.

So what I've done is tried to create a sanctuary for people to escape politics this season. I also work hard to create, original, interesting, even-handed content.  I think this effort brings more people together, right here on this site, than talking about politics, ever could.

Last, history, if it is to be believed, does not prove your theory.  I'm sorry.
