I have not read Dead Souls but I liked The Nose and The Overcoat very much.
The chart is interesting. Uranus on the ascendant and exalted and he certainly has an obscure and unique approach. N.N and Mars/detriment in Libra in the 12th does speak of dehumanization and humiliation of people built into the soviet structure as a collective. He has Venus conjunct Algol in the 7th /Taurus and it gives me the impression that the values and or relationships are seriously lacking humanity and show no concern for compassion. The only planet in the whole relationship quadrant conjunct Algol is soviet system cold.
