People want to learn astrology, but they don’t know where to start. Start with your own (natal) chart!
Get an inexpensive Natal Report. This will tell you what you should be noting in your chart. This is from a sample report:
Mercury in 3rd house:
Inquisitive and communicative, your mind seems to be ‘on’ all of the time and you are forever gathering information and sharing ideas. Your attention span may be rather brief; you have many and diverse interests, and are easily distracted. You learn quickly, are eager to pass on what you are learning and thinking about, and may talk excessively.
Moon Trine Mercury:
You would be an excellent teacher or counselor for you listen sympathetically, and encourage others to express their inner thoughts and feelings. People trust and confide in you, and you are able to read between the lines and to sense what their feelings are as well as what they are saying. You work well with and understand women, and the emotional, feminine side of life. You are articulate on personal (rather than factual or technical) subjects. Keeping a diary or journal would be satisfying for you. You also have a talent for learning languages.
Mercury Conjunct Mars:
You have a sharp mind and a sharp tongue as well, and love a vigorous discussion or debate. You express your thoughts in a clear, decisive, convincing style. You dislike vagueness and fuzzy thinking, and are quick to point out the discrepancies in another’s argument. At times you are verbally aggressive and abrasive to others, and you tend to overstate your case or offend people by your unadorned frankness. You can be an effective spokesperson, lawyer, or salesman. You have an aptitude for writing as well, particularly criticism or satire. You enjoy mental challenges and mental work.
Mercury Square Pluto…

The report provides interpretations of various aspects but from here, you can google those aspects or planet placements (Sun in the 8th house, Mercury in the 2nd house, etc.). This will give you access to a variety of interpretations and you’ll be off and running.
If you run into a question, there is a supportive community in the forum of this blog. You can post your chart and ask whatever it is that’s confusing you.
Mostly, it takes time. I started with astrology when I was a child. I was eight years old. But I would not say I was a “natural” by any stretch of the imagination.
I got serious about astrology in my mid-twenties. I really had to beat the stuff into my head. I read virtually every astrology book that had ever been published at that time. I was driven and I eventually became dedicated.
You may not take it that far, but if you do this much, you’ll start to become conversant with this topic.
Good luck!
After decades spent reading (back then) astrology magazines and books, and now, websites and forums, I’ve at long last taken the plunge and have begun to construct my own natal charts. It was suggested to me that doing a chart by hand is one of the best ways to really get a feel for what that moment in time represents in terms of a soul entering human form. I started with my own chart, battling with my very weak math skills to calculate my UT time of birth and come up with the degree of my ascendant. I have plenty of charts done by computer showing the same thing, but I wanted to do it for real. I did the whole chart using an atlas and ephemeris and drew my own chart wheel. Tortuous every step of the way, but I really wanted to use my bare hands, so to speak, to FEEL what the chart was telling me. I then studied the planetary placements and basic aspects and did crude interpetations for each one, then added info I’d gleaned from books and the internet. It was so hard I wanted to give up at times but when I finally completed this one chart, I’d learned so much more about the true meaning of the natal message and myself that I’m really glad I went to so much trouble – it was worth it. Following my first chart, I’m now using a computer to print out the charts of friends, family and others unknown to me, and have then pencilled in the interpretations for reports. It’s beautiful – like looking into someone’s soul. I see everyone in a totally different light now. It’s one of the most deeply moving experiences I’ve ever had. Why oh why did I wait so long to do this? I’ve missed so much. If you have an interest in people and astrology, don’t leave it for as long as I did – go for it! You will be rewarded a thousand times over for your efforts.
I have learned how to make a chart of someone born in India. No computers for me. I have the ephemeries.I have studied my chart.Things confirm.I have had look at many charts(mostly my relatives). I have studied their lives. I have skimmed charts of my friends. i have told my friends their attitude towards life, but I am not into predictions. One of my predictions was spot on.
I have not started consultation though.
