I have a variety of allergies. Animals, pollen, and some foods.

I have had a very easy life with very little trauma. I have a hard time believing trauma caused my allergies.
I saw the opinion years ago that our bodies evolved to control infections, and this ability can turn to into allergies and auto immune disorders when we live in a super clean environment.

My first food allergy was raw eggs. I can eat them cooked. I developed this one as a child.
My second food allergy is the preservative sodium benzoate. I developed it after treating rosacea with benzoyl peroxide. I was in my late 20s.
My third food allergy is alpha-gal.  I carry an auto inject epinephrine for that one.  This one is tricky as it comes from a tick bite injecting it into my body.  It took me three years to determine the reason I had GI symptoms from both  hamburger and milk.

Always have Benadryl in the house!  There could be some variety of berry or flavoring or coloring in the cake that you've never had and wouldn't know you're allergic to.  It could contain Sorbitol or Mannitol.  I know a woman who reacts severly to Yellow food coloring.

We can also develop allergies to foods we consume in excess over long periods of time.  And develop allergies to things we weren't allergic to as children.  I grew out of my childhood hay fever, but discovered in my 20s that I'd become allergic to cat dander, and also to aspirin.

@warped interesting. See, I know the fake sugar is bad but I used to eat a lot of it.

Then I was dx with lupus, due primarily to sores on my face... and more.

Anyway, I am wondering if I am misdiagnosed with lupus. Could it have been all the Splenda I used to use, causing the relentless rash, open sores? Seems it could.

Honestly,  I am stunned at how bad an allergic reaction can be. Not just this one, but the one I had to the drug I was taking for the condition I don't have. Too weird.

My mom had similar breakouts on her face from her late 30s when she had toxemia at the end of her pregnancy with me, her only child.  Her skin finally cleared in her 60s and became so beautiful she was often complimented on it.  Was it perhaps hormonal in her case?

@warped it was all over my arms too, for the better part of a year.  I also took antibiotics for six months!

I'm sorry, but now I see why, Henry, avoided doctors for 50 years.

Reading around, I think there was sugar alcohol in the cake. I see it's a common ingredient in products like this. I just have to avoid fake sugar, which I already do.

I just thought SUGAR was used in cake.  Live and learn!

They don't have to report the use, under a certain level.

That should be illegal!  What if even the most minute amount could be life threatening?  Imagine just a tad of Xylitol, which can be deadly to pets!  Imagine just a bit of peanut butter, which killed a college student when used in Chili back in the 80s, first time I ever heard of peanut allergy!
