The soldier and I watched Gone With The Wind this weekend, you may be surprised to learn that prior to Saturday, I’d never seen the movie in my life. He was. This movie came up in my astrology class, so we watched it and I enjoyed it immensely. Most the way through it, I told him I felt most aligned with the madam in the movie, Belle Watling.
“I’m the whore,” I said. “I most relate to her.”
“P, you do not. You are not a whore!”
“Well I know that but I’d be considered one by women like the ones in the movie. That is I’m an outsider. I would never be part of that community I would never be accepted by women like that but she obviously has great heart. I mean she is tries to give her money. She gives advice, she gives comfort, she’s gives her money but none of that matters – there is just no way for her to be accepted into the community, she’s got to serve as the shadow. I don’t think it matters She’s not cut out to be anything but what she is.”
“P, you’re no whore.”
I rolled my eyes because did I say I was a whore?
Which character on Gone With the Wind do you most resemble? Add the astrology if you can…
I hate to admit it, but the past few years I most resemble Ashley, but with indoor plumbing. He just could *not* take a stand in the dilemma he found himself in.
These days, I’m more a hybrid of Melanie and Belle. There’s a combination for ya!
I can’t believe you never saw the movie before! I read the book in 8th grade, and was lucky enough to see the film on a big screen when it was re-released for the 50th anniversary. Love it!
“I can’t believe you never saw the movie before!’
Yeah, well I never saw Star Wars until 20 years after the fact. This in spite of having a boyfriend with a full Darth Vader costume back when the movie came out! I don’t get out much… but really this is what growing up isolated without a tv does to you. Don’t ask me about popular culture…
for good or ill.. 😉
When I was young I read a very old copy of the book. The last page was missing. It was years before I discovered that “tomorrow is another day”. I loved the book and the movie though, especially after I checked out an intact copy of the book from the library. I think I married my first husband primarily because he was from Atlanta.
I related most strongly to Scarlett when I was young. I’ve definitely grown into a Belle though, thank god. 🙂 I never fit in but like Scarlett I used to try in my own quirky way. Now that I’ve given up I’m much more at ease.
Becca, Scarlett pissed me off through the whole book. I read it because of Rhett! It was alllll about Rhett!
And I’ll tell you something – that scene in the movie where he’s drunk as a skunk and he puts his hands on her head, telling her he could squeeze her skull until it snaps like a pecan or walnut or whatever nut he used as an example…then sweeps her up the staircase in his arms? Still, in this crazy closet romantic’s mind, the HOTTEST scene ever filmed.
Yeah. I’ve got issues…
Elsa, I didn’t see Star Wars until 10 years after it was released. hah!
I loved this book because of all the twisted characters. (My Moon in Pisces loves twisted characters).
And as for me, I saw Star Wars 10 times in the first year after its release! Hah!
But I still have never seen GWTW.
Me and you, casseia! I’ve never seen the movie nor read the book. 🙂
This seems politically incorrect, but I’m straight-up Scarlett. Mars (in Cancer) rising and I’ll never go hungry again, so help me God.
Total Scarlett with my Aries Stellium, tho I like to think I’m less self-centered in my middle age.
What a piece of writing: “She gives advice, she gives comfort, she’s gives her money but none of that matters – there is just no way for her to be accepted into the community, she’s got to serve as the shadow. I don’t think it matters She’s not cut out to be anything but what she is.” This is so me I can bearly stand it. Last night I attended the red-carpet pemier of a film about some old friends of mine (Torey’s Distraction- check it out). There I was, same as always. Great metaphor. How do you end up the shadow with your closest friends? Family? Serving the shadow, serving AS the shadow- I was a shadow at the event, and actually, even ended up becoming a shadow in the movie itself. This morning I woke up thinking… why does this still feel so bad? I mean, I know I need to serve the collective, and I know that what I do is valuable. But eeeeew I’d like to do it and not feel like an outsider at movie premiers.
BTW- Scorpio rising, Neptune on the Asc, Venus in Scorpio. Get invited to a party, feel distressed there, notice how it works for those in the stream, try to accept it, and right underneath there is always this urge to get in there and keep trying to show up and fit in. There’s probably a way to turn this around, like playing up the outsider-on-the-guest list thing. It’s not like I have EVER, EVER felt comfortable at a coctail party in my entire life. :-). When my son and I got home from that event, we were both like- GOD I love my quiet life. But we were both envious of the others with the social scenes. Good place to work. Thanks again, Elsa.
I’m Rhett. No doubt. Kind of strange since I’m a girl…..
